2023-24 Call for Nominations:

We are pleased to present our annual call for nominations for membership into the Society for the Study of Black Religion (SSBR). Membership in the SSBR is by invitation only—new members must be nominated by any member of the Society in good standing between October 1 and January 5 before the next annual meeting (March 21-23, 2024). The nomination must include:

Nominees must have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in hand at the time of nomination and show evidence of present or demonstrated contribution to the scholarly study of Black religious experiences.  The nomination comes to the Executive Committee for vetting and proposes the nomination to the membership for approval.  Nominees and their nominators are informed of the vote by the membership no later than February 20th and are invited to attend the 2024 Annual Meeting where they will be formally inducted into membership.

Nominees may also be PhD (ABD) and therefore qualify for Associate Membership.  The mechanism of nomination is the same as above.  Once the Associate member has completed the degree program, she/he/they should inform the Executive Director so that they may be moved to full membership status.

Please send the nomination packet consisting of all four of the required documents for the candidate you wish to nominate in a single pdf or MSWord document to ssbrnominations@gmail.com by January 5, 2024. If you are nominating more than one candidate, please create a separate pdf for each candidate.

Warm regards,

Michele E. Watkins

Executive Director
